Projected in a makeshift cinema housing a 12' x 9' wall, 'Necessary Intermission,' a sixteen-millimeter film made from assembling film strips that generally precede and proceed a movie, materially articulates the chemical processing, tones from silver, grey, and black emulsion are interrupted by harsh, bright white light filling the dark room each time we pass the threshold where two film strips are conjoined.

'Necessary Intermission' was created for a live cinema performance on July 6th, 2017, presented at the Milton Avery School of the Arts, Bard College.

Guide paths were created within the space using a pile of white plaster sanding lines the ground along the screen wall's width. 100-plus viewers seated on black folding chairs split into two sections. making way for another guide path down the middle to accommodate passersby, anyone needing to enter and exit, and a 16 mm projector. The ambient sound of white noise machines generally used to create sonic interference filled the theater as the artist paced, circumnavigating the entire room. The film strip runs through a projector with several failed starts, at one point catching a small flame. The room was hot and bothered.
