A recorded exchange between a participant and a therapist uses color and language to translate an experience of chronic pain. The session is mediated by a light device whose shifting wavelengths correspond to spoken responses. The work documents this process in real time, aligning the apparatus of projection with the mechanisms of therapy and description. Through repetition and restatement, Word for Word exposes the limits of representation, testing how affect and perception are conditioned by the systems that record them.
